Skógafoss is by far Iceland’s most famous waterfall! It isn’t the largest in the country, though.
According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area hid a treasure chest behind the falls, + while the chest was never fully recovered, part of its handle is said to be displayed in a nearby museum.
Historically, Skógafoss marked the coastline before the sea receded, giving it deep roots in Iceland’s early settlement era. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of the natural history + folklore.
